The tragic events in Uvalde, TX, leave us heartbroken as a nation.
We lift all-too-familiar prayers for the families, friends, and community affected by yet another act of senseless and preventable violence.
No community is untouched by gun violence. Two nights ago, a gunman killed a neighbor 600 feet from my home in the slow massacre that haunts my own community, where we are too accustomed to the sounds of gunfire and news of loved ones lost.
We must do more to prevent these tragedies going forward with federal legislation that regulates the sales, transfers, and ownership of guns; bans assault weapons; and mandates enhanced background checks on all firearm purchases so that children may go to school free from fear.
A healthy nation attends to the pain of its people.
