Statement on the Independence Day Shootings

Yesterday, as we celebrated Independence Day across the nation, we also watched in horror and with heavy hearts as more violence stained our streets with blood.

In Highland, Illinois, cheers and laughter were replaced by gunfire and cries for help; while at our own Boom Island Park celebration, the sound of fireworks was replaced with the explosion of gunshots. This senseless violence must end.

When I am elected to Congress, I will work to develop comprehensive public safety legislation that gets weapons of war off of our streets, as well as maintains adequate funding for community-based police departments to keep us safe from harm.
